The LORD looks down from heaven and sees the whole human race. -Psalms‬ ‭33:13‬ ‭(NLT)

Have you ever had someone say or do something so bad to you that you wish someone else witnessed it, because you’re sure no one would believe it?

When that happens to me, I break the fourth wall. In stage and other visual performances, if you imagine the performers you’re watching in a box, the fourth wall is the invisible wall that separates you (the viewer) from the performers, who are unaware of your presence. Sometimes, however, a performer may look right through that fourth wall and look to, or even address, the audience.

In our lives, we’re the performers on stage, and God is watching us play out the roles in our lives. And, for me, breaking the fourth wall to tell God that I can’t believe this other person did or said that brings me comfort.

Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant. -Galatians‬ ‭6:7‬ ‭(NLT)

Fellow true believer, God is not mocked. He sees all. You are never alone in your experiences, good or bad. Nothing is hidden from His view. Take comfort in knowing that God is just, and will serve justice according to His will and timing:

But the LORD watches over those who fear him, those who rely on his unfailing love. He rescues them from death and keeps them alive in times of famine. -‭‭Psalms‬ ‭33:18-19‬ ‭(NLT)

I have been forgotten like one who is dead; I have become like a broken vessel. -Psalm 31:12 (ESV)

We walk by faith, not by sight. -2 Corinthians 5:7 (ESV)

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. -Romans 8:28 (NIV)

It’s a very hard thing to watch a loved one fall, suffer, and go down their broken road. We all know someone like that. We all have our broken roads to travel.

For unbelievers, it may be a road to perdition (eternal damnation and punishment for unrepentant sinners). For believers who have accepted Christ in their hearts, it is losing our way from the path God intends for us.

As believers…as agents of light…the light we carry and reflect–God’s light–can be used to help us navigate our path, and help draw others down the same path. It can be a guiding light to follow, like taillights of the car ahead of you at night, or a light to warn away from danger, like a lighthouse.

It’s the hardest thing to not just try and save yourself or a loved one in your own strength. In doing so, you may be enabling repeated sin, and delaying a very important tipping point: everyone must journey alone to their point of utter brokenness, so the Lord can work with them.

Trust in the Lord. Trust in His plans for you. Trust in His plans for your loved one. As I have to relearn over and over, you cannot control what others do, but you can control what you do. Choose to be His hands and feet in using His Word to guide you back on the right path and shine brightly…and that can aid others on their paths as well.

Trust that the broken road is what God needs us to travel to further sanctify us and take our broken pieces and put them together in a better way than we could have ever imagined. He can turn anything around. Let’s walk.

Today’s soundtrack

Jeremy Camp’s “Walk by Faith” reminds us to do just that, even down a broken road, which prepares His will for us.

For we walk by faith, not by sight. -2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV)

A man’s heart plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps. -Proverbs 16:9 (NKJV)

I don’t know about you, but I sometimes struggle with this verse.

I love the idea of it, but it’s so hard to not sometimes not walk by sight, especially after walking this earth blind—but thinking I was seeing clearly—for 40 years. I’m getting better at it, though, because it’s so freeing to stop stressing and worrying and making “what if I’d decided the other way?” second guesses following a hasty and prayerless decision.

The context for this verse is in Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians, where he gives the assurance that our world things, like our house and mortality, are just of this world, but that God has better things planned for us ahead. So, we will groan and life’s events will happen, but in anticipation of this, God has given us the Holy Spirit to dwell in us while we are absent from the Lord.

It’s actually during the most trying times when it’s actually been easier for me to walk by faith, because it’s in those situations when I just throw up my hands in surrender. Well, hands up in surrender is the perfect position for a believer, isn’t it?

So, day by day, moment by moment, and step by step, let us remember our walk is first with the Lord. He’s got great plans for us, and our walk here on earth is a journey through which He is making us ever more in His Son’s image. Let’s walk.

Today’s soundtrack

Jeremy Camp’s “Walk by Faith” reminds us that every step we take in faith has a God-given purpose for our lives.

May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine on us—so that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations. May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you. May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you rule the peoples with equity and guide the nations of the earth. May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you. -Psalm 67:1-5

When we conduct our daily lives, who does the world see? Do they see supernatural grace, wisdom, strength, joy, and courage…or do they see the opposite?

Our calling is to make Him known to all corners of the earth. Agents of Light is one channel devoted to doing just that, and we all do this in our daily walk, often without realizing it. You don’t have to start a ministry…you are a walking ministry!

Don’t get me wrong…if God puts it on your heart to minister in a certain way (as He did with me to start Agents of Light), then by all means, do not ignore Him. But the common denominator is that we all minister to those around us in our walk.

This means to be more aware that you, as a child of the One True King, represent the Almighty God here on this earth, and how you walk can show evidence of the fruit of the Spirit. And this evidence is what can entice nonbelievers to ask questions…which can potentially lead to you recruiting another agent!

And yes, this means that we are aware, especially in our hardest and darkest times, that we are His children, and that He carries us. Always take refuge in Him when times are tough, rather than crumbling in your own strength. Most importantly, celebrate Him in all circumstances, not just when times are good.

He knows and sees all you face, and is with and for you.

When you remember this, you can stand up to anything the world will throw at you…and after it passes, you will still be standing. And the world will see Him in you.

Today’s soundtrack

Jeremy Camp’s “He Knows” reminds us that, no matter how alone or forsaken we are, He knows what we are suffering through, and is with us.
