You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. -Ephesians 4:22-24 (NIV)
Have that one old comfy shirt, jacket, or outfit you just can’t let go of? That one that everyone’s seen you in a few too many times? The one that you keep making excuses for why you can’t throw it away?
Well, old and sinful habits are much like that, aren’t they? Even as we have become new people through Christ, and he has made our scarlet sins whiter than snow (Isaiah 1:18), we sometimes go fishing for that old garment…that old, dated piece that we just won’t let go of.
And that causes problems in our new walk, doesn’t it? To try and walk our new walk with God, but still wearing our old ways and habits. They just don’t work together. And those old habits seem to feel heavier and heavier, the longer you walk.
So, burn that old cloak of sin…that kind of cloak is good at burning! Let go of the old and put on the new you that Christ has brought to you. You’ll find that your walk is so much easier.
