Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. -1 Timothy 4:7 (NIV)

As for God, his way is perfect: The LORD’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him. -Psalm 18:30 (NIV)

Ray Tomlinson, the man who introduced the @ symbol into email addresses, died at the age of 74. What’s odd is that it reminded me of a superstitious belief that some people fall into: If you don’t forward a certain email you receive to 10 other people (the number varies), you will die.

The message and threat can vary, and in this day and age, the message may come in the form of a Facebook post that must be re-shared, or text message to be forwarded. I know people who believe they are responsible for sick loved ones dying if they don’t visit them in time. Whatever the method of transmission, or whoever thinks they control the ultimate destinies of others, superstition flies in the face of believing in a God whose ways and timing are perfect, who makes no mistakes.

As His children, we can walk every day in absolute confidence that it is not silly superstitions that affect destinies or fates, but God alone, and all we need to concern ourselves with is to improve our obedient walk every day to be closer to Him. Superstitions are distractions to fool us into forgetting that everything is in God’s hands.

God’s word is our perfect shield against the falsehoods of superstition, because we know He works out all things for the good of those who are called (Romans 8:28).
