ps-90-2-500sq

Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. -Psalm 90:2

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. -Isaiah 40:28

This question usually comes up when things aren’t going well, especially when things are disastrous. Maybe it’s one or more of the ages-old suspects: violence, corruption, greed, natural disasters, disease, or death.

When unbelievers ask that question, they usually mean it in a derisive, mocking way. As a believer, you might even ask that question because you can’t believe God would let something so terrible happen.

What the question reveals

God’s Word tells us that His thoughts and ways are higher than ours. And in our own lives and those around us, it’s clear over time that His ways do work out…but usually not in the direct, short paths we’d like life to play out. But in our smallmindedness, we compare God to us…to a human standard…and dare to say that a loving God would or would not act a certain way. Woe to those who subscribe to that line of thinking!

The answer to the question

To believers who get so discouraged that they ask this question, or to doubting unbelievers, the answer is the same.

The answer to that question is: He is here among us. He never left. He always has been, and always will be. He is greater than your disbelief, exists despite your disbelief, loves you despite your disbelief, will outlast your disbelief, and is ready to meet you when your heart is ready to accept Him.
