Those who give to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes to them receive many curses. -Proverbs 28:27 (NIV)

Ever pulled up to a street corner and pretended to look like you couldn’t see the person begging for food or money next to you? Ever decided in your head that you wouldn’t give money because they were lazy, conniving, or just going to spend it on drugs or alcohol?

I have. There was even a time when I grudgingly agreed to help a man, and then grouchily decided what he could have to eat from a fast food menu.

Well, the Lord woke me up in 2013, and things were never the same. Because we do all we do for the Lord, there is never enough we can’t do for those who are lesser than us, to His glory. To meet the gaze of the poor, and to give them what we have, is to do what the Lord has done for us: He gave us life, and will give us life in the next world.

We do not have to worry about where our next meal will come from, or whether we will have shelter over our heads, or whether we’ll be subject to all the dangers that come from living on the street. We are so, so blessed. We can trust that if we give our all for the Lord, He will take care of us abundantly. Try it and see.
