I know that You can do all things, And that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted. -Job 42:2 (NASB)
In the 2000 movie Gladiator, the hero, Maximus, faces an opponent who has every advantage over him. His opponent is none other than the Emperor Commodus, who not only strips the hero of his rank, but even has his wife and child killed. When the two face each other, Commodus tells Maximus in agonizing detail about how his family was tortured, humiliated, and suffered before being killed.
Can you imagine being in his shoes, and hearing such things after having lost everything? Maximus faces such words with amazing grit, saying, “The time for honoring yourself will soon be at an end.”
I was reading the devotional book Act Like Men, which reminded me of this intense scene. And in the bible, there was also the intense life of Job, who lost everything. But through it all, He acknowledged God’s sovereignty and his plans and purposes we not only cannot understand, but we know will come to pass.
In our lives, we will face seemingly insurmountable opposition, whether it’s through people or circumstances. No matter what, God’s will will be done, and even when you are taunted and beaten down in the moment, that moment will expire. And in the end, only God will be honored as He gives us the supernatural grit we don’t have alone to stare our opposition in the eyes and say that God is about to change everything to His glory.
Keep the faith, walk in His Word, powered and strengthened and boosted by Him. He will carry you, obedient servant, through this moment, over any obstacle, to the other side.
