Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. -1 Samuel 17:51 (NASB)

Just about everyone knows the story of David and Goliath. It’s an especially powerful and inspiring one for my son. As we all know, the entire Israelite army cowered before the Philistine giant who taunted them for forty days. And we all know that David rejected King Saul’s armor, and trusted in the Lord to defeat his mighty opponent with a sling and smooth river stones.

But what many don’t know (most kids’ bibles omit this), or forget, is that after David toppled Goliath, he took Goliath’s own sword and cut the giant’s head off with it. For a giant whose spear and shield were too heavy for a normal man to carry, his heavy, metal sword most certainly would have also been too much for a normal man–much less a boy–to pick up or wield!

To put it mildly, God was with David, and David had unflinching faith in His God to deliver. Can we do the same with the seemingly impossible giant challenges and problems we face in our lives…the ones that everyone else chooses not to face? If God has made it clear to you that you should take a certain path, take it, and trust that He will get you to the other side, no matter what giant obstacles are in the way.
