And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. -Romans 8:28-29 (NIV)

It was on the morning of August 28th, at 8:28 a.m., that I was thinking of Romans 8:28. So, I was thinking about Romans 8:28 at 8:28 a.m. on 8/28!

And the thoughts leading up to that very moment were this: that I could look back and see ever more clearly the promise of Romans 8:28 in action. It’s even clearer if we don’t just isolate verse 28, but read on through verse 29 onward.

Without God in your life, past mistakes are just wreckage in your wake, and such heavy sin burdens that they can consume and drown you. They can leave open wounds that wrongly define you.

But with God in your life, those past mistakes are healed wounds, with scars to simply remind you of the healing He has done in your life. The wreckage is not wreckage at all, but reorganizing of the pieces He needed to take or leave behind to make a newer, better path for you.

He truly works in all things…in all situations…in all people…to bring His will and purpose to reality. His will will be done, and He works through people. And while He works through us, He also purifies and sanctifies us toward Christlikeness.

The broken road is on the way to higher ground, with clearer air. And as you progress, you get stronger with each step upward. He is purifying you in His fire. Trust and truly believe, especially as you take a breather to look back in hindsight at the path you can see Him making for you, that He is rearranging the pieces of your life to fall into place.
