The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe. -Proverbs 18:10 (NKJV)

If you’re anything like me, your mind is constantly racing. I overthink things, I overanalyze things, and I can make situations far more complicated than they need to be. And being a fix-it personality by nature, I tend to want to act immediately to remedy or repair issues I discover.

Well, that mental busyness can carry a heavy price. It can distract from more important matters elsewhere at the time, or more important details before me that I missed because I focused on the wrong thing. It can also affect others, who may enjoy my time (and vice-versa), but my mind has already gone down a rabbit hole.

This distraction can potentially give the enemy the foot in the door that he needs to keep you increasingly off balance spiritually. Busyness is a great way to lose focus from the Lord…and it’s a slippery slope.

How to combat the horde

Think of all the things racing in your mind, and all the things you think are so important that need to be done, as hordes of attackers on the horizon. They’re all charging toward you…whole battalions of them! And there are waves and waves of them.

They’re coming from all sides. What do you do?!?

You take refuge in the Lord. He is your strong tower, your safe place. Retreat, if needed, into the Lord, under His wing, and let the horde of busyness clamor and raise a ruckus at the doors of your mind and heart, but don’t let them in.

Retreat into prayer, and be renewed in focus and strength. And when you emerge, you will see which attackers are worth defeating, and which are just distractions meant as decoys. Carve your path once again with God-given purpose, rather than getting lost in the horde.

Don’t ever forget His tower.
