For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. -2 Corinthians 5:1 (NASB)
Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. -Matthew 11:28-29 (NASB)
I wandered this earth for 40 years before I came to Christ…and that reminds me very much of how the Israelites wandered for 40 years in the wilderness before they could enter the Promised Land. For them, their disobedience had to die in the wilderness with the generation that chose to not trust God’s assurances.
Those wanderers were indeed weary of spirit, though God miraculously supported them by never letting their feet get sore, nor their clothes worn or tattered! OVER FORTY YEARS! It’s amazing how we miss the blessings under our noses while we whine about earthly pains we concentrate on.
In my 40th year, my disobedient walk apart from the Lord was left behind as I took a new fork in the road, choosing Jesus. And He filled my heart and shod my feet with footing and a foundation I’ve never had before. And yet…
…I could wear myself out even in my new journey by letting my earthly, natural self take over. I could tire of my journey by changing the journey from a victorious one to His glory to a wandering, whiny “why me?” broken record and focus on myself.
We’re tired travelers. Our earthly bodies may ache. Our hearts may sink. Our eyes look at the ground. What can we do? We can refocus on Him and feel lightness of mind and body and spirit.
Whether you have yet to come to Jesus, or have accepted Him but have lost focus through the all-too-easy self-pity in the face of earthly struggles, all it takes to right your path is to get back to basics: lay down the burdens you’ve been carrying, surrender all to the Lord, and finally find rest and comfort and strength in Him.
Crowder’s “Come As You Are” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjgioXrnEME reminds us that there is no sorrow, no burden here on earth that Heaven can’t heal…we just need to lay down our burdens that we’ve been bearing in our own strength all this time.
